Standard I: Use of Information and Ideas
School library media candidates encourage reading and lifelong learning by stimulating interests and fostering competencies in the effective use of ideas and information. They apply a variety of strategies to ensure access to resources and information in a variety of formats to all members of the learning community. Candidates promote efficient and ethical information-seeking behavior as part of the school library media program and its services.
reflection
Media specialists by nature are lifelong learners. When we have learned something new and exciting, we always want to share what we have learned with others. With the advent of the Internet and Social networking sites, this sharing has become more efficient, but we still need to make sure that what we share and what others share with us is done in an ethical manner. This ethical use of information is a big part of what the standard listed above is about.
During my coursework, I have completed many assignments and projects that have dealt with the Use of Information and Ideas. I have found that my Personal Learning Network has become my most valuable resource. This website has allowed me to share ideas with others and gain new ideas to implement at later times. This resource has allowed me to save readings from classes in a more visual format that I can refer back to later to help me with other class assignments and projects. There have been many facets of the program that have required me to abide by ethical and legal policies while still showing my knowledge of how to locate, evaluate, and present this information to others.
While presenting information and ideas to others, media specialists may have to come up with new and exciting ways to convey their message. I believe that the Digital Video and Technology Integration projects that I have completed demonstrate my knowledge of sharing information and ideas to others. I believe that media specialists are role models, not only to students, but teachers as well. The digital video project shows students that teachers love to read and if they find something they like, they will too. The technology integration project shows teachers a new way of presenting a lesson and will hopefully excite them to want to try to create lessons using this program, as well.
