Being a Media Specialist is about being a leader for teachers and students at a school. Being a leader to me means being able to work with others in a positive way to help the school function properly and make sure all staff and students have what they need. A media specialist needs to have a wonderful and positive relationship with all staff and students. The teachers have to know they can come to me when they need help finding resources or planning units. The students at the same time have to be open to asking me for helping them when it comes to research. A media specialist must be willing and have a positive attitude to do whatever is required for the school community.
A media specialist must be flexible and indispensable He or she must be there when teachers or students need help and truly be an information specialist. One thing that really helped me meet this standard was jumping in and helping where needed any time I was at a school site. What I haven’t learned through helping in the Media Center, I have learned through the professional organizations I have joined and through my PLN. Media specialists have a special role and have a job that not everyone can do and be successful. My PLN has helped me to stay current on new and innovative uses of technology and how to present information such as during Professional Development, so that I can lead my teachers and students into the next century of learning.
Also, by attending meetings and helping my media specialist I see just how important she is to the school community. She is like the center or the heart of the school. Teachers, administrators, and students are constantly looking for her and needing her assistance. All of the work I did helped me grow and understand the standard of being a leader but watching and helping the media specialist opened my eyes to how important being a leader is.
