Standard II: Teaching and Learning
School library media candidates model and promote collaborative planning with classroom teachers in order to teach concepts and skills of information processes integrated with classroom content. They partner with other education professionals to develop and deliver an integrated information skills curriculum. Candidates design and implement instruction that engages the student’s interests, passions, and needs which drive their learning.

A media specialist is not the first person in mind when you think of a teacher, but they truly are. They are there to not only teach students, but teachers, as well. Media specialists also learn from their peers and from those they keep in touch with through social networks, like their PLN. PLN’s aren’t the only way to keep in touch with others, though. Collaboration is the key to developing lessons that will bridge the gap from the classroom to the media center.
My Personal Learning Network has always been my guide whenever planning or designing instruction for teachers and students. It has been a way for me to organize lesson ideas in one neat space to turn to later when I start to write my lessons. Before I can begin planning lessons to place on my PLN, I must collaborate with the teachers in my school in order to know what is going on in their classroom and how I can be of help when their students come into the media center.
This collaboration is evident in my task as an Instructional Partner. Through this collaboration I was able to create and implement a lesson that met CCGPS standards, but also gave students a chance to use a new form of technology, the iPad to create a cartoon video of a short story.
I have also created an Information Literacy plan that allowed students to play the role of President for a day and then have a newspaper article created that described their day in office. This lesson gave students real life scenarios of what the President may do during their day and also showed pictures of former Presidents performing that task. This assignment also required me to create a set of links called a Stack on Delicious, which can be used as a PLN, as well.
This standard has opened up many doors to instructional tools and Web 2.0 sites that can be used to present and store information. I have created a site on Weebly, uploaded videos to Vimeo and documents to Scribd. I have created virtual posters called Glogs on Glogster, slideshows on SlideRocket, and many more. I will take these tools with me in my professional endeavors and use them to teach others, but also add to my knowledge bank for future learning.
