This standard covers the roles of the media specialist. In order to administer the library media program, the media specialist has many hats. The administrative roles include facilities design, inventories, collection development and more. Media specialists also have to be information specialist when it comes to intellectual freedom, technology, and policy development.
During my coursework at Georgia Southern, I have completed many assignments and projects that have showed me how to effectively administer the media center. One of the assignments that gave me a further idea of how run the media center was the Facilities Plan. It showed me that there is a lot of work involved in arranging the media center into zones or areas that are conducive to having classes while also letting students have quiet spaces. The media center also needs to be arranged in such a way that students are not backed up with check ins and check outs. Once the media center is arranged, there need to be materials purchased for student and teacher use that will facilitate the activities that you want to see happen in your media center.
After the Facilities Plan, the Collection Development Plan and Reference Collection task helped me to stock my media center with the latest materials that students and teachers could use for research or pleasure reading. Learning the art of Grant Writing has allowed me to supplement the Media Center's budget in order to purchase other materials that may be needed or just wanted without breaking the bank.
Overall, this standard is the most important to me. It is the job of a media specialist to support the school and make sure teachers and students have what they need when it comes to information. A media specialist is an
information specialist and she is at the heart of a school.
